The old town

Explore Annecy, the Venice of the Alps, teeming with scenic beauty and history. Roam through the old town and wander its cobblestone pedestrian streets, arcades, traboules, hidden passages and winding houses with typical Italian architecture. Still today, mediaeval arteries remain (Sainte Claire gate, Perrière side), which mark out the old town from the rest of the urban area. You can also stroll along the flower-lined canals that wind through the town, and discover the Old Prisons, also known as "Palais de l'Isle".

Castles

Lands full of history, terroirs and character, Haute-Savoie offers a rich heritage that shares a close bond with human history. Explore Annecy Castle, a listed historical monument, which sits on the Semnoz mountainside overlooking the old town. The Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard has stood guard over the lake for almost a millennium and is another listed historical monument. Legend has it that this castle gave Walt Disney his inspiration for the cartoon Sleeping Beauty. Discover the Château de Montrottier, built above the Fier gorges.

Churches

Thanks to its geographical setting, Annecy has been of great historical significance, particularly through the creation of the order of the Visitation by François de Sales and Jeanne de Chantal. Discover the Basilica of the Visitation at the edge of the Crêt de Maure forest. Visit the neoclassical style church Notre-Dame-de-Liesse. You'll be enchanted by the Church of Saint-François-de-Sales at the edge of the Thiou, which over time has become the Church of the Italian community. Discover the "flamboyant" Gothic-style Church of Saint-Maurice and don't miss the 15th-century trompe-l'oeil painting to the left of the choir. As you walk along the canals in the old town, you'll see the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre standing above a square.

Come and see the masters at work! The Paccard Bell Foundry is the global benchmark for churches bells and chimes. Here you'll find stoneware pottery, bronze sculptures and exhibitions of paintings in an old traditional house of the Bauges Park and at the foot of the Semnoz at the Col de Aravis Pottery. Discover the magic of molten glass at the Souffle de Verre workshop. The creations take shape right before your eyes, using ancient techniques to make all kinds of glass objects.
